2nd Counselor, Asia North Area Presidency Seoul, South Korea

President Yoon Hwan Choi currently serves in the Church’s Asia North Area Presidency with responsibilities in South Korea, Japan, Guam and Micronesia.

After graduating from BYU-Hawaii and earning a master’s degree from Utah State University, he left a successful career in information systems and Korea-Taiwan venture capital investment in 1989 to become the Church’s regional manager for temporal affairs in Korea.

President Choi says BYU-Hawaii was a “wonderful preparation” for his career. “I learned such great things. I had no fear to go up front and do my job.” He also describes the aloha spirit he felt when he first came to BYU-Hawaii as “very wonderful. Even though that was the first time for me to leave my country and study in a foreign country, I didn’t feel that this was another new town. It was just kind of like the same place that we used to live.

President Choi says the friendly greetings and words of his teachers and leaders at BYU-Hawaii have become like an “iron rod” to him. “They sustain me in living the gospel with great joy. Even though I’m located now in Korea I can still see their smiles. Their images showed such a love as Jesus Christ had.”

I don’t think we are there yet, as much as President McKay’s vision’s expectation; but I think that we are getting closer to the expectation level. As we pursue our life with our great efforts, and then live the gospel and do what the Lord asks us to do, those things that we learned from the school, we are achieving little by little. Sometimes it’s surprising: Did I do that? Did I accomplish that much?
